The social sciences are built on fundamentally different ground. The subject of inquiry is human behavior: the choices people make, the meanings they construct, the patterns that emerge when individuals interact with each other and with machines. And human behavior is not deterministic. People are not governed by fixed, universal laws in the way molecules are. They are contextual, emotional, culturally embedded, and reflexive — they change because they are being observed, studied, and theorized about.
This gives social science knowledge its most distinctive property: it is fuzzy. The patterns researchers identify are real, but they are probabilistic, context-dependent, and bounded by conditions that are difficult to fully specify. A hypothesis about how employees adopt new technology in one organization may not replicate cleanly in another. A theory of trust built on studies from one cultural context may break down in another. This is not a defect in the research — it is a truthful reflection of the subject matter. Social reality is genuinely messier than physical reality.
Knowledge Is Negotiable
The fuzziness of social science knowledge has a crucial downstream consequence: knowledge in this domain is negotiable. There is no equivalent of the double-blind trial or the replication experiment that definitively settles a theoretical dispute. Reasonable scholars, reading the same body of evidence, can reach different conclusions — and they frequently do.
This can feel disorienting, even destabilizing, to researchers trained to think of knowledge as something you either have or don’t have. But the negotiability of social science knowledge is not simply a problem to be managed. It is also the engine of the field. It is what makes intellectual debate meaningful. If all questions were settled by decisive experiment, there would be nothing to argue about. In social science, argument — rigorous, evidence-grounded, theoretically coherent argument — is the mechanism of knowledge production.
The peer review process, imperfect as it is, is best understood as formalized knowledge negotiation. When a researcher submits a paper to a journal, they are bringing their knowledge product to market. Reviewers — experts in the relevant domain, themselves operating with bounded and varying understanding of the literature — evaluate the product not by a universal standard but by their informed judgment. If they are persuaded, if the paper survives the negotiation, the knowledge gets codified. If not, the researcher revises, repositions, or resubmits. The goal is not to discover a truth that was already obvious. Papers in high-paradigm natural sciences move fast because the benchmarks are clear.
In the social sciences, the opposite is true. A submission to a top Information Systems journal, a top management journal, or a top organizational behavior outlet might take six months to a year to receive initial reviews — and those reviews might run to twenty or thirty pages of dense commentary. The reviewers bring different theoretical frameworks, different readings of the literature, and different methodological commitments. Each one has to be persuaded on their own terms. The authors must revise, respond, and resubmit. Multiple rounds of review are the norm. The entire process, from initial submission to final acceptance, can easily span two to three years, during which time the empirical landscape the paper was written to explain may have shifted significantly.
This is not bureaucratic dysfunction. It is the cost of operating in a knowledge domain where evaluation requires genuine human judgment, where reviewers cannot simply run the numbers and check whether the results hold. The ability to stay with a project across years, to absorb negative feedback, to revise without losing the original intellectual energy, to resubmit after rejection — this is what distinguishes productive scholars from brilliant ones who produce little. In a field where the feedback cycle is long and the outcome uncertain, tenacity is not merely a virtue. It is a survival skill.
Part III: The Conservative Enterprise — Why Radical Ideas Fail

Journal editors issue calls for “nascent theory,” “indigenous theory,” “novel frameworks.” The rhetoric of innovation is everywhere.
But when genuinely novel work appears, the review process tends to pull it back. A reviewer confronted with a new theory will ask: ” How do I know this is any good? Test it. When the author tests it, they must operationalize abstract constructs — translate rich theoretical concepts into measurable variables. That operationalization almost inevitably dilutes the theory’s original richness and scope. Then another reviewer asks: how does this connect to the existing literature in our field? The author adds grounding in established concepts. That grounding inevitably modulates the theory’s novelty, softening its departures from existing frameworks.
The result is that genuinely radical ideas — even when they originate from smart, careful researchers — tend to get sanded down in the review process until they fit comfortably within the existing paradigm. The conservative enterprise is not malevolent. It is the rational behavior of a system that can only evaluate what it can benchmark.
Comfort Zones and Probability of Rejection
Researchers who understand this dynamic learn to work within what might be called the comfort zone of the field — a conceptual space close enough to the existing corpus that reviewers can evaluate the work, but differentiated enough that it registers as a genuine contribution. Ideas too close to existing work are trivial; ideas too far from it are uninterpretable. The sweet spot is careful, well-positioned novelty: a finding that surprises, but not so much that it cannot be benchmarked.

What “Manipulating Surprise” Actually Means
One of the most practically useful — and, to some, ethically provocative concepts in understanding social science research production is the idea of manipulating surprise. The phrase sounds deceptive, but it describes something that every successful researcher does, whether they name it or not.
Because social science knowledge is fuzzy and negotiable, and because every reviewer brings different bounded rationality — a different reading history, different theoretical commitments, different intuitions about what matters — the same body of empirical findings can be positioned in multiple defensible ways. Which prior studies you emphasize. Which theoretical lineage you claim membership in. Which gaps you frame as critical versus minor. Which findings you foreground in the abstract and introduction. None of these choices is neutral. All of them shape how reviewers perceive the contribution.
Manipulating surprise means making deliberate, strategic choices about how to shape the presentation of knowledge so that reviewers experience your work as genuinely surprising and valuable. It means identifying the specific gap in the literature that your work addresses, then narrating the literature in a way that makes that gap vivid and urgent. It means selecting the theoretical anchors that put your contribution in the best light. It means choosing which existing findings to emphasize — not because you are hiding contrary evidence, but because all literature reviews involve selection, and skilled researchers make that selection strategically.
This is not dishonest. It is rhetoric in the classical sense: the art of presenting true things in the most persuasive way. Because bounded rationality is real, because reviewers genuinely have different understandings of the field, and because none of them understands your specific project as well as you do, there is genuine room to shape how your work is perceived. Good positioning is not spin. It is good writing and good scholarship.
The Practical Mechanics
What does this look like in practice? It means asking, before writing a paper: given the landscape of existing knowledge, what is the most compelling framing for what I have found? It means reverse-engineering the gap from the finding, rather than starting from a naively enumerated literature review. It means thinking about which journals’ readerships will be most receptive to this particular combination of topic, method, and theoretical frame. It means understanding that a paper rejected from one journal for being “too incremental” might be accepted at another for being “a careful and rigorous contribution to an important question.”
Strategic positioning is a learnable skill, and doctoral programs that do not teach it explicitly leave their students unnecessarily disadvantaged.
Part V: The Gatekeeper System — Elite Knowledge and the Drawer Problem
The Dichotomy of Elite and Forgotten Knowledge
The journal system creates a stark, almost brutal dichotomy. A research project that has not been published exists, in the discourse of the field, essentially nowhere. It cannot be cited, built upon, or challenged. It sits in someone’s folder — possibly representing genuinely important insights, carefully gathered data, rigorous analysis — and contributes nothing to the corpus of knowledge.
When a project passes through the gatekeepers, the editors and reviewers of a reputable journal, it undergoes a transformation. It becomes elite knowledge: codified, accessible, citable, and available to be built upon by future researchers. Its value in the knowledge economy of the field jumps from zero to something real. The same ideas, the same data, the same arguments: the only difference is the stamp of institutional validation. This is not entirely satisfying philosophically, but it is how the system works.
Type I and Type II Errors in Publication
The journal system makes two kinds of errors, and they are not symmetric in their consequences.
A Type I error occurs when a weak or flawed paper gets published in a good journal. This happens. The self-correcting mechanisms of science eventually kick in: the paper receives limited citations, replication attempts fail, follow-up work qualifies or contradicts the findings. Incorrect knowledge that enters the corpus tends to be slowly filtered out over time. Type I errors are costly but recoverable.
A Type II error occurs when a genuinely good paper gets rejected and never resubmitted. The researcher, exhausted by the process, tucks it in a drawer. The insights it contains never enter the corpus. Future researchers reinvent wheels that this paper might have made unnecessary. Theoretical advances that this paper might have enabled do not happen. Unlike Type I errors, Type II errors have no self-correcting mechanism — because the incorrect decision is that the knowledge doesn’t exist, and in the absence of publication, it effectively doesn’t.
This asymmetry has a clear implication: the cost of giving up is higher than the cost of submitting imperfect work. The researcher who submits a flawed paper and gets it published has contributed something, even if imperfectly. The researcher who abandons a good paper because the review process was too discouraging has destroyed something. This is why tenacity is not simply a nice quality for researchers to have — it is an ethical responsibility to the knowledge enterprise they have chosen.
Part VI: AI, Emerging Technologies, and the Limits of Existing Paradigms
The Speed Problem
The conservative character of social science research creates a particular challenge in the current era of rapid technological change. The development of AI, robotics, autonomous systems, and human-machine interaction is happening faster than the research enterprise can comfortably absorb. The innovative instinct says: the existing frameworks may not fit, and forcing them onto genuinely novel phenomena may produce worse science than developing new frameworks.
General Patterns Transcend Specific Contexts
One response to this tension is to recognize that general patterns in human behavior tend to transcend specific technological contexts. The broad dynamics of how humans adopt, resist, adapt to, and are shaped by new technologies — the interplay of exploration and exploitation, the tension between autonomy and control, the organizational politics of innovation — these patterns do not disappear just because the specific technology is new. A theory of organizational learning developed in the context of enterprise software has something to say about AI adoption, even if the specific mechanisms look different.
This is not a counsel to ignore the genuine novelty of AI. Autonomous systems, agentic AI, and human-machine collaboration at scale raise questions that existing theory cannot fully address. But the instinct to throw out the corpus of knowledge and start from scratch because the technology is new is mistaken. The existing literature provides a base from which genuinely novel theoretical work can be developed — which is different from applying old frameworks mechanically to new contexts.
Where the Existing Paradigm May Eventually Break Down
There is, however, a horizon at which the existing social science paradigm faces fundamental challenge. If AI systems become sufficiently autonomous that meaningful human agency is removed from consequential decisions — if the “human in the loop” becomes genuinely vestigial — then the social science of technology may need to grapple with phenomena that are no longer fully social in the traditional sense. At that point, the fuzziness of knowledge may need to be recalibrated, and new epistemological frameworks may be genuinely necessary.
But that horizon is not yet here. For now, humans remain deeply implicated in the sociotechnical systems they build, and the tools of social science research remain applicable.
Part VII: The Publishing Industry and the Politics of Knowledge
Who Controls the Streams of Research?
A question that haunts thoughtful researchers is the degree to which the direction of academic knowledge production is shaped — or controlled — by the commercial interests of the publishing industry. The major academic publishing houses — Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor & Francis — are profit-making enterprises. They own the platforms on which knowledge is distributed, and they have at least nominal influence over the institutional apparatus of top journals.
The standard response from publishing houses is that they do not meddle in editorial decisions. The editor-in-chief is chosen with minimal input from the publisher. The editorial board is chosen by the editor-in-chief. Day-to-day decisions about what gets published are made by editors and reviewers who are independent academics. This is broadly true as a formal matter.
But formal independence and substantive independence are not the same thing. Publishing houses that are profit-motivated have structural interests in maintaining systems that generate reliable revenue. Open-access models, preprint cultures, and alternative distribution channels challenge those interests. The subtle, difficult-to-measure pressure that commercial interests may exert on the evolution of academic publishing — on what kinds of platforms get built, what kinds of journals get acquired, what kinds of reforms get resisted — is real, even if its specific contours are hard to document.
The Concentration Problem
Perhaps more concerning than direct editorial interference is the concentration of the distribution infrastructure itself. If a small number of publishing platforms control access to the majority of top journals, and if tenure and promotion systems at universities worldwide are calibrated to publication in those journals, then the ability to participate meaningfully in the knowledge enterprise is, to some degree, gated by those platforms’ commercial decisions.
Researchers whose work does not fit the standard formats that top journals accept — who work in genuinely interdisciplinary spaces, or who prefer methodological approaches that are less legible to mainstream reviewers, or who work on problems that are important but not fashionable — face structural disadvantages that have nothing to do with the quality of their work.
This is not a new problem, and it has no clean solution. But awareness of it matters. Researchers who understand that the journal system is not simply a neutral evaluator of quality — but is also an institution with commercial interests, professional politics, and structural conservatism — are better positioned to navigate it strategically, to seek out alternative venues where appropriate, and to advocate for reforms that make the system work better for knowledge.
Part VIII: Teaching, Research, and the Broader Distribution of Knowledge
The Synergy Between Research and Teaching
The journal system is the dominant channel for the distribution of academic knowledge, but it is not the only one. The classroom is a distribution channel too — and for some kinds of knowledge, it may be the more important one.
The researcher who is actively engaged with the current literature, who is thinking hard about unresolved questions at the frontier of their field, brings something to teaching that cannot be manufactured from archived lecture notes. The most powerful teaching in doctoral programs and advanced seminars happens when an instructor is genuinely wrestling with open questions — when the uncertainty of the field is visible in the classroom, when students can observe what it actually looks like to think at the edge of existing knowledge.
This is the synergy between research and teaching: they are not competing claims on a scholar’s time, but mutually reinforcing activities. Research makes teaching current and honest about uncertainty. Teaching — especially the questions students ask, which are often strikingly direct about the field’s unresolved tensions — can sharpen a researcher’s thinking in ways that solitary writing cannot.
Conclusion: What the Social Science Researcher Must Internalize
The picture that emerges from this analysis is of an intellectual enterprise that is deeply, structurally human. It is human in its subject matter — the behavior of people — and human in its epistemology — knowledge constructed by people, evaluated by people, negotiated among people with different understandings and different interests. It is not the image of science that many researchers carried into doctoral programs. But it is the image they need to carry in order to do the work well.
The researcher who understands that knowledge is fuzzy and negotiable does not become cynical — they become skilled at the negotiation. The researcher who understands that the enterprise is conservative does not produce timid work — they become strategic about positioning genuinely significant contributions within a framework the field can receive. The researcher who understands that Type II errors are the greater danger does not produce reckless work — they develop the tenacity to find a home for their best ideas rather than leaving them in a drawer.
And the researcher who understands the institutional machinery of publishing — its commercial interests, its structural biases, its imperfect but real function as a quality filter — does not become paralyzed by cynicism. They become a knowing participant in an imperfect system, working to use it well and, where possible, to make it better.
The social sciences are not the white-coat sciences of popular imagination. They are something more interesting, more difficult, and, in their best moments, more human.
